Тематические тесты по английскому языку

Учебное пособие "Тематические тесты по английскому языку" является сборником тематических тестов для лиц, которые изучают английский язык, но имеют базовую подготовку среднего и продвинутого уровня. В книгу включены тесты трех видов.

В основную группу входят тесты, позволяющие определить уровень владения лексикой, которая более всего используется носителями английского языка - более 10 тысяч словарных единиц.

Вторую группу составляют тесты, обозначенные звездочкой (*). Они включают менее употреби­тельную лексику и, по усмотрению студентов, могут не использоваться в процессе работы с данным пособием. Однако следует иметь в виду то, что знание этой лексики и умение правиль­но ею пользоваться в речи свидетельствуют о языковой эрудиции учащегося. Тесты, содер­жащие подобного рода лексику, несомненно, заинтересуют тех, для кого накопление словарного запаса является своеобразным хобби, и тех, кто намерен сдавать Cambridge Proficiency in English Examination.

Тесты, которые вошли в третью группу и обозначены двумя звездочками (**), содержат терминологическую лексику. Для их выполнения учащиеся должны быть знакомы с той или иной сферой деятельности либо отраслью знаний. Однако пласт терминологической лексики, содержащейся в тестах третьей группы, не выходит за рамки программных требований для общеобразовательной школы. Неправильно выполненный тест третьей группы свидетельствует либо о недостаточном уровне ознакомления учащегося с предметом, либо о незнании терминологической лексики, свойственной той или иной сфере деятельности либо области знаний. Например, в задании: Which of these is not a reptile? a) alligator b) frog c) lizard d) turtle — уча­щийся может знать все словарные единицы, но не увидеть разницы между рептилией и ам­фибией. Основную массу таких примеров читатель найдет в разделах II, III, V, IX, XII и XVIII.

Принимая во внимание изложенное выше, автор счел целесообразным включить в пособие "Тематические тесты по английскому языку" тесты, связанные с различными сферами человеческой деятельности и областями знаний.

INTRODUCTION

THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK

Owing to the emphasis in recent years on functional and communicative approaches to language learning, many other important areas of the language have been neglected. One such area is vocabulary. This book is an attempt to remedy this situation by trying not only to fill a real gap in the materials available, but also to show that vocabulary learning can be just as much fun and just as stimulating as other activities.

TESTS AS TEACHING MATERIAL

Both testing and teaching are so closely interrelated that it is virtually impossible to work in either field without being constantly concerned with the other. Tests may be constructed primarily as devices to reinforce learning and to motivate the student. They may develop and increase the student's awareness, as well as his stock, of vocabulary. A well-constructed test will provide the student with an opportunity to show his ability to recognise or to produce the correct forms of the language. Provided that details of his performance are given as soon as possible after the test, the student should be able to learn from his errors and consolidate the pattern taught. In this way a test can be used as a valuable teaching device. (Heaton, 1975 : 1—2)

LEVEL AND THE CHOICE OF WORDS

The book is intended for intermediate and advanced students, who have already gained the confidence to speak, write, read and listen to a lot of English; they only lack words. It will, it is hoped, also be useful to teachers of English, if only as a source of test material. The lexical items have been drawn from several sources including the major frequency counts and a number of other vocabulary lists found in widely-used EFL textbooks of various kinds.

The main source of lexical items has been the Cambridge English Lexicon compiled by Ronald Hindmarsh. The vast majority of the lexical items are taken from Hindmarsh's level 3—5 (level 5 meaning that the item is approaching or at FCE level), but there are also tests in which words from level 7 (estimated as appropriate for the Certificate of Proficiency in English) are to be found. Those more difficult tests and exercises have been marked with an asterisk (*).

Some further common, useful and elementary words (e.g. diet, lifestyle) have been included although they do not occur in any of these lists. These are words frequently encountered in shops, offices, newspapers and in radio and television broadcasts.

TECHNIQUES USED

The book covers a wide range of topic-areas concerned with everyday practical and social situations and consists of a variety of tests and exercises. The lexical items are introduced and tested through techniques which include multiple choice, matching, gap-filling, word-formation and crossword puzzles. The first two techniques measure the student's passive vocabulary and should provide practice in recognition. The latter two lend themselves better to checking and broadening his knowledge of active vocabulary and should provide practice in production.

There are tests and exercises based on problem-solving, grouping words, pictures, sentence-building, ordering, reading, opposites, synonyms, errors, and so on. They test the student's knowledge of how an item is used, where it is used, what its limitations are, how it behaves in certain situations, what other words are likely to occur with it, and so on.
